“What? That’s it!? No, ‘Congratulations Titus! You’re my hero, Titus! You survived the death pit, Titus! Great job!’” I spat. I wasn’t the type of person who craved praise or compliments, but a little acknowledgment would have been nice.

She smiled weakly, “You did a wonderful job. I am proud of you.”

I frowned. There was clearly something bothering her. It was kind of unnerving because I’d never seen her like this. She was a big powerful being and she looked utterly pathetic. I felt really bad for her and in that moment I realized I’d come to deeply care for her, “What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing.” she said, “The boy who had the key. I knew him once upon a time. He was a good lad, he came very close to completing his mission.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” I said, “I should give it back to him. He saved my ass.”

She nodded and against my better judgment I descended the stairs once again. Just being in that place after getting out once was giving me PTSD flashbacks, but I knew that everything that lay ahead of me was going to be more difficult and most likely more terrifying. I walked over to the far left wall and found that pile of bones. His tunic really was nearly identical to mine, and his boots as well, his garment was even adorned with the same runes as mine. A chill ran up my spine as I bent down and examined the body closer. I set the key aside and reached into the neckline of his tunic. I felt something hard, something attached to a string. I pulled it out and studied it in my hand, holding it side by side with my own. It was an identical white crystal to the one Lucretia had given me for luck. Her voice rang in my head, ‘I think the Hero of Aethindra should have something like this, don’t you?’

“What the fuck?” the hairs on my neck raised even though I didn’t quite grasp the implication yet. Why was he dressed just like me? And why did he have the same special ‘good luck, Hero Crystal’ that I had? In a moment of madness I started to think he was a clone or something but I compared my hand with his and saw that even in a skeletal form his hand was bigger than mine.

My cheeks flushed with anger as I stormed out, “Who was he!” I yelled at Seraphina.

“Like I said, he was a-”

I cut her off, “No. No! Bullshit! Who the fuck was he?”

“I don’t know why you’re getting so worked up. Let’s go back to town. You’re tired. You just went through a very trying ordeal.” she said.

“I will quit. I will fucking quit! I cannot do what you want me to do if I can’t trust you. I’m serious.”

She looked at me glumly and folded her arms, then threw her hands up in resignation, “Fine. His name was Leander. He was the first.”

My eyes narrowed at her, “The first what?”

Seraphina sighed, “The first hero.
